Theatre of Dare’s "A FEW GOOD MEN" Prepares To Open

Looking for an evening of great entertainment? The solution is readily available with Theatre of Dare’s stimulating production of Aaron Sorkin’s "A Few Good Men". Anyone with a love of exhilarating courtroom drama will appreciate the fast-paced dialogue combined with the military background of the characters. The natural tension between two branches of the military, the U.S. Navy and the U.S.Marine Corps is very evident throughout the proceedings.

Lt. j.g. Daniel Kaffee (Barrett Gregory) is assigned by JAG to represent two Marines (Steven Moore and William Bird) accused of murdering their fellow soldier Pfc. William Santiago, played by Austin Briggman. Joining Kaffee in the defense is Lt. j.g. Sam Weinberg (Neil Ferguson); although her desire is to represent the defendants herself, Lt. Cmdr. Joanne Galloway, portrayed by Linda Hughes, must share this duty with Kaffee and Weinberg. The conflict between these characters is marked in the vastly different styles of defense that they utilize. Adding to the mix is the hard-nosed attitude and arrogance of the base commander, Lt. Col. Nathan Jessup (Tom Charity) and his formidable sidekick, Lt. Jonathan Kendrick (Robert Lewis). Capt. Mathew Markinson (Tom Filkins) must deal with his conscience and his sense of duty during the tense situations that develop throughout this entire ordeal. Lt. Jack Ross, played by Dave Richmond, has been assigned as the prosecuting attorney.

Rounding out the rest of this stellar cast are David Jones (Capt. Whittaker), Mike Hejduk (Cpl. Howard), Jack Mann (Cmdr. Stone), Bill Fenner (Judge Randolph and Cpl. Hammaker), Mike Hunter (Sgt. At Arms and Cpl. Thomas), Frieda Brown as the orderly, Lisa Cahoon (chief legalman), Kyle Trew (Cpl. Dunn and M.P#1), and George Malosky as M.P. #2.

Charlie Meyer is the renowned director of this production and has created a show that will be remembered as a first in Dare County. He delightfully entertained us with last season’s production of "Blithe Spirit" and brings his expertise to our stage once more. "Charlie’s style of directing is a perfect match to this show", says producer Linda Hughes. "He keeps us all on schedule with precision and decisiveness that is equal to the inner workings of the military. This is an actor’s piece with minimal stage sets and utilization of a few props and Charlie knows just how to bring out the best in his actors to highlight this setting."

As an added bonus, theatre patrons who attend the Sunday, March 4th production at 2 p.m. will have a wonderful opportunity to hear Donald Marcari, Attorney at Law, give a short talk on his real-life experience with the case represented in this show. Mr. Marcari is the lawyer upon whom the Daniel Kaffee character is based; Tom Cruise portrayed him in the movie version. Although this play is based on Marcari’s first big case (and only the third of his career), the Hollywood version was glamorized considerably. Marcari has graciously agreed to give a behind-the-scenes accounting of the true story. "We are so pleased to have Mr. Marcari make himself available to the Theatre of Dare, and strongly urge you take this opportunity to see the show and hear his side of the story", says Meyer.

Aaron Sorkin, who wrote the script and the screenplay for the movie version, has been busy as Executive Producer for NBC’s "West Wing" and produced the comedy series "Sports Night"; he also wrote the script for the movie "An American President". The very popular TV show "JAG" was also developed from "A Few Good Men". Sorkin’s witty, snappy dialogue easily grasps and holds your attention; his trademark characters, which are clean and clearly defined are constantly confrontational within the script, yet are easily recognizable to us all.

"A Few Good Men" runs March 2,3,9,10 at 8 p.m. The Sunday matinees are March 4 and 11 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $9 at the door, $8 in advance, $7 for seniors and $4 for students. Tickets may be obtained at Manteo Booksellers in Manteo, Corner Stitch and Frame in Kill Devil Hills, or Gray’s Department Store in Kitty Hawk, or by calling 441-3088.
